First of no doubt many questions:

My laptop is running windows 8 - is Odin etc. compatible or should I use the older one running 7?

No idea about win8. It should work but never tried it. It's fine on win7 tho.....

Thanks Kev, but I haven't even got the phone yet - I'm a great believer in being prepared, especially when I don't know what I'm doing! The upgrade is due in a few weeks and I plan to get an S3 to play with - just hope I don't get impatient and try to root the 'One'

Edit: see my post below - not going anywhere near the One

Just been looking through the link to xda in the OP on 'how to',

There's an awful lot of techno-speak in there, strikes me that it's written for people who are pretty competent with the technical stuff and not for those with little or no experience, i.e. me!!

If I'm going to attempt rooting I believe I'm going to need a lot of help, not least to explain the lingo - when the time comes are you guys up for it, or am I being too ambitious? :?

XDA is not for noobs, in fact you will get shot down on there in an instant :)
Rooting the S3 is as simple as putting one file into Odin and pressing start and as Kev says, we are always here and noob friendly :)

Thanks guys :D

Been thinking, might be an idea to get something cheap and cheerful to practice on (SG Ace etc.) before potentially 'bricking' a brand new SGS111 - what do you think?
