In Laws laptop stuck on Windows 8

PostPosted by Gillsfankev » Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:58 pm

Hi guys.

In-Laws have abandoned their laptop because they didn't get on with windows 8.

Trying to upgrade it to windows 10 but it says I have to update it to 8.1 before that. I go into the store and it says 'Upgrade to windows 8.1 for free'
Whenever I try to download it it fails and asks to try again. It never works.

There are 115 updates to do but it never downloads them (Just sticks at 0kb and 0 downloaded)

Any advice?

Get all needed data off it, reinstall reinstallation from hDD, upgrade to 8.1 then to 10

The Win8 was put on by a PC 'Tech' bloke

If I get all the needed info off it and factory reset the Acer will I definitely re-install?

Depends if the Tech bloke did a recovery partition.

What os does the sticker underneath state?

If the free upgrade is also available from 7, I'd do it that way, God knows what tech bloke did and if upgraded should have provided a disc or backup

How big is the q drive?
If 6-10gb or so, it's the recovery partition.
Try it out by tapping alt+f10 on boot and see if recovery options are available.
If not it won't allow it.
Make sure everything is off it first.

If not a recovery partition, you can download any win 7 (as long as 32 or 64bit matches the sticker on back) then enter the product code off the sticker to make it legit, with windows it's the legit product code that's important, not the need for the disc to be genuine.

I'll try the win7 download route. That available from Microsoft site?

Alt F10 just brought up recovery but I needed the discs that I haven't got

Q drive in accessible
