How to: Root Galaxy S3

As long as your laptop will load the drivers and recognise the phone it doesn't matter which OS. (Win 8 works for me).
You need these files and your data cable.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/958 ... ti9300.zip
This will just give you root access and will not unlock the phone from the network.
You can root without unlocking but you CANNOT flash a custom ROM until you get unlocked......

Xperia Z5 Dual Sim, EE & O2.
Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet LTE, Three.

So, do I take it I need to download and save the above files? Seem to recall from one of your previous tutorials that they need to be saved to an individual file/folder? Can I save them to the desktop?
Ps, phone is sim free from CPW so will be unlocked?

Make a directory call "S3ROOT" and copy both files to that directory.
Unzip then both ONCE only.
The Odin zip will give you an .exe file which you double click and the Root zip will give you a .tar.md5 file that you put into the PDA section in Odin.
Then put the phone into download mode (Volume Down + Home + Power) and press Vol Up to continue.
Connect cable to phone and Laptop (The COM box top left will change colour and show a port connection) and when you see "Added" or "Leave CS" in the progress window, press start :)
Every phone I've had from CPW has been unlocked so you should be fine, just check the CSC (*#1234#) if its a CPW, BTU or OXA it will be unlocked.

Make a directory - would that be the same as create new folder?
I have no idea what you mean by 'unzip'

My biggest problem is that I don't understand computer speak - unzip, directory, boot etc., I need it in plain step by step English. Once I've done it I will know the lingo, but for now it's a foreign language

Ok, the phone has arrived :D

Presumably I set it up as normal in the first instance?

Yes, rooting alone will not change anything with respect to layout, setup etc.....
